#45 – Gyroscopic Stability

Gyroscopic Stability

01:16:47  |  What is gyroscopic stability and how does it work for rifle bullets? This, and other related questions are the topic of this episode, which follows Chapter 10 of Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting. Anyone who’s seen an arrow or rocket align itself with the air has observed fin stability, but spin stability is a little less intuitive to grasp. The spinning top analogy is often used to describe bullet stability but there are caveats with that comparison. This episode covers the peculiar nature of gyroscopic stability including side effects like yaw of repose and gyroscopic (spin) drift. We also discuss the relationship between stability and precision (groups) for long-range shooters.
